Fashion Wins and Sins: Grammy Awards 2014

There were many wins – and some surprises – on Sunday night for the Grammy Awards. In addition to the awards handed out and the performances that caused gasps and claps, there were fashions that stopped us in our tracks.

Wins

The trends for this year’s Grammy Red Carpet were metallic embellishments, shimmer, sheer and lace.

Kelly Osborne – I adored her red carpet gown and the jewelry she selected as a good luck homage for her dad.

Taylor Swift – The gown, hair and beauty look were all perfect. She looked stunning. When she performed on the Grammy stage, I thought she looked more mature than I’ve ever seen her. Other than her headbanging moves on stage, I thought that she looked fabulous all evening. I love that she dances and sings along with others’ performances. I enjoy her fun spirit.

Queen Latifah – Her black gown during the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performance was a great look for her – glamorous and a feminine silhouette. She knows how to wear a dress. Her looks never wear her. She owns everything she puts on.

Mary Lambert – With two stunning women in the Macklemore performance (plus the amazing Madonna, but I didn’t much care for her all white suit), this performance and these ladies shined brightly. Mary’s red gown flattered her shape. She looks more and more confident on stage with each performance. I hope to see more great looks from her.

Chrissy Teigen (aka Mrs. John Legend) – Her gold beaded gown was all that someone would want for a walk down the red carpet (well, and maybe the body that went into that gown).

P!nk – Everything – and I mean everything – she does is flawless. Her talents on the stage for vocals, acrobatics and choreography continue to blow my mind. She always rocks it on the red carpet and on stage.

Beyonce- That white lace Michael Costello gown. Just whoa. (Come on, did you think I would leave Queen B off of this list!?)

Paris Hilton – The white and sheer gown was outstanding. It was sexy but a bit more reserved than what we’re used to from the powerful socialite. I’d like to see more of this type of style on her rather than what she’s previously known for wearing, which we know wasn’t much.

Colbie Caillat – Sheer was really in at the Grammy’s and this red and sheer floral gown was a great way to wear this trend. It brightened up her face and accentuated her great shape. If you want to get in on the lace and sheer trend, check out lace and sheer gowns on Rent the Runway.

Sins (My “what were you thinking” list)

Lorde – Please stop wearing your wine inspired goth lipstick. In addition to the fact that she is able to make her beautiful face look lifeless, she wore pleated high waisted pants which made her appear much heavier than she is.

Kacey Musgraves – Her clothes lit up for her stage performance. Need I say more? Yikes.

Pharrell – The rest of his ensemble wasn’t too bad, but that hat made up for more than enough “what were you thinking?” for this look.

Katy Perry – I wasn’t a fan of LED outfit for her onstage performance of “Dark Horse” or her musical note tulle gown that she wore on the red carpet. I thought they were a little too obvious and a bit cheesy.

A look that I liked (but it didn’t quite make the “best dressed” list) was Martina McBride in a midnight blue David Meister gown. If you like this too, you can grab a similar look on a budget with  Style 3310 at David’s Bridal for $119.
